Cranial Morphology & Coat Genetics: The Two Official Classes and Unofficial Types

In canine genetics, the Chihuahua breed is uniquely rich in morphological variety. The only distinction recognized by official kennel registries (AKC, UKC, FCI) is coat variety: Smooth Coat versus Long Coat. Both varieties share identical breed standards for body conformation, movement, and temperament. Smooth coats have close-lying, glossy hair with soft undercoats or single coats, while long coats display soft, flat or slightly wavy outer coats with heavy fringing on ears, neck ruff, and pants.

Informally, breeders and pet owners distinguish between ‘Apple Head’ and ‘Deer Head’ skull shapes. Apple heads feature a round, 90-degree cranial stop and large, prominent eyes set into shallow sockets. Deer heads have a longer, deer-like muzzle with a gentle 45-degree angle. While only apple heads meet conformation show specifications, deer heads generally experience less brachycephalic airway turbulence, reduced reverse sneezing, and fewer eye proptosis vulnerabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions: Chihuahua Types & Varieties

Is a Deer Head Chihuahua a purebred dog?

Yes. A Deer Head Chihuahua is 100% purebred; ‘Deer Head’ refers strictly to a natural variation in cranial and facial bone structure. While show conformation judges penalize the sloped forehead and longer snout, deer-head dogs are fully registered purebreds and often enjoy fewer respiratory and dental crowding issues.

Do Long Coat Chihuahuas shed more than Smooth Coat Chihuahuas?

Surprisingly, no. While long coats shed longer hairs that are easier to see on furniture, smooth-coat hairs are stiff and needle-like, easily embedding into upholstery and fabrics. Long-coat hairs tend to clump together into manageable soft dust bunnies that are simpler to brush out and vacuum.

What coat colors are recognized in Chihuahuas?

The Chihuahua breed standard permits virtually every color and pattern combination imaginable, including solid fawn, black, white, chocolate, blue (dilute black), red, cream, and sable, as well as parti-color, brindle, and tan markings. The only widely restricted pattern among ethical clubs is double merle due to congenital deafness and ocular defects.
