Do you know what you’re letting yourself in for?
Before bringing any kind of pet into your home you need to be sure that you fully understand what owning and caring for a one really entails. Getting your first pet Chihuahua is no exception and there are several things you should know before you make a final decision.
Chihuahuas are tiny little dogs but they also have incredibly high energy levels. They may not need a huge amount of grooming but they do need a lot of time and attention.
The first issue is time. When they are puppies Chihuahuas need constant attention so if you work you may need to get someone to dog sit until it gets a bit older. When the dog is older, it will continue to require a lot of attention but you will be able to leave it alone while you are at work. Chihuahuas are extremely social with and loyal to the people they love.
Usually the only other type of pet a Chihuahua will tolerate in the house is another Chihuahua. More information about this issue can be found in this article .
Chihuahuas are high energy dynamos, they almost never stop moving. Some dogs may bark excessively and this could obviously annoy you or your family members and even cause you problems with your neighbours.
While Chihuahuas may not need a lot of grooming they do need some grooming. Their nails must be clipped and they need bathing and brushing to avoid skin ailments. Like any other pet they need regular veterinary check-ups and this may prove expensive. As with any other pet, if you cannot afford the occasional vet fees you should really reconsider keeping one.
Chihuahuas will chew things
Let’s face it, all dogs love chewing things and Chihuahuas are no exception. They don’t know the difference between your Prada high-heel shoes and a pair of old slippers. You will need to train your dog not to do this but until you do expect to lose a few things.
Chihuahuas are loyal to a fault. They will fearlessly attack any animal or person they feel is threatening the one they are loyal to and love, regardless of the size of the threat. Obviously, given the tiny stature of Chihuahuas, this could end in tragedy for your courageous pet.
Please do not buy a Chihuahua as a fashion accessory. Think carefully about the reason you want one. Get a pet Chihuahua for the companionship and love that they will willingly offer you and not as a fashion statement.
