There are only Two Types of Chihuahua
You may have heard that there are several different types of Chihuahua. There are only two. There are different colours and like people they come in different sizes. A different size does not mean a different breed, they are all Chihuahuas.
The two different types of Chihuahua are the short haired Chihuahua and the long haired Chihuahua. Short haired Chihuahuas have short sleek hair which does shed. Most owners agree that this is the easiest type to keep in terms of grooming. However grooming for the long haired type is not really difficult at all.
The hair of the long haired Chihuahua will grow to a length of one or two inches and is wavy. This type of Chihuahua does not require hair cuts as the hair will never grow long enough to need cutting.
The only difference between the two types is that long haired Chihuahuas need to be brushed more often. You should also use a steel comb after brushing to remove tangles and mats.
Which type of Chihuahua is best?
There is really no difference between long haired and short haired Chihuahuas with regards health, personality, temperament or habits. A Chihuahua will always be a Chihuahua whatever the length of his hair, so one is no better than the other. Some people prefer long haired Chihuahuas and others the short haired. Beneath the fur the features are the same. They share the same eyes, ears, muzzle and nose. It simply depends on the preference of the owner for long or short hair.
Both types of Chihuahua will shiver, which is often due to excitement or nervousness but is also sometimes due to them being cold. Despite any stories you may of heard, long haired Chihuahuas do not retain body heat any more efficiently than the short haired variety. So again there is no benefit from having one type of the other. It is all down to personal preference.
